Foot-and-mouth affecting cattle

Many cattle in Svay Rieng province’s Svay Chrum and Chantrea districts have fallen ill or died from foot-and-mouth and other diseases over the past few weeks, resulting in the launch of a cattle vaccination campaign. Soun Norng, the deputy police chief of Chantrea district, said on February 7 that more than 100 head of cattle in Chantrea and Soursdey communes had been infected by foot-and-mouth disease in the past two to three weeks, including seven that died. However, he added that most of the sick cattle had recovered after being treated by veterinary officials. “This happens every year, but not this much. Now they have recovered because veterinary officials came to check and provide treatment,” he said. Hong Samith, the police chief of Svay Chrum district’s Svay Yea commune, said many cattle belonging to villagers were affected by foot-and-mouth disease, but he did not know the exact figure.
